ἀχραδάμυλα

ἀχραδάμυλα
ἀχραδάμυλα
Grammatical information: ?
Meaning: ὁ κοχλίας H. (`snail').
Other forms: Cf. ἀκραμύλα· κοχλίας, Ταραντίνοις H.; χραμαδοῖλαι· χελῶναι. καὶ αἱ νωθρόταται τῶν κυνῶν. οἱ δε τοὺς κοχλίας H. (Here the last explanation has clearly been later added as the cases do not agree.)
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: As two forms have δ and μ, in ἀκραμύλα the syllable with δ will have been lost (either in reality or only graphically: in ΑΔΑ?); as two forms end in -μυλα, the original form will have been ἀχραδαμυλα. οι beside υ is well known in Pre-Greek words. The analysis will be *(a)krad-am-ul-a, with well known Pre-Greek suffixes. - The word resembles closely the town Καρδαμύλη (Il.; and on Chios); for the metathesis s. Fur. 392 (τέρμινθος\/τρέμιθος).
